What drives the cost of retractable screens

Retractable screens are made to the opening. A standard single door and a sixteen-foot patio opening are the same product category and a very different price, because the housing, the track and the mesh all scale with the span.

A single screen retracts from one side. A double meets in the middle from both, which is what wide openings need, and it is closer to two units than to one and a half.

A retractable door screen carries a latch, a handle, a speed-reducing mechanism and daily traffic. A retractable window screen is smaller, lighter and simpler. They are not comparable line items even at the same width.

Standard insect mesh, a fine no-see-um weave, a pet-resistant mesh and a solar-control mesh sit at different price points. Solar mesh is the one that also does something for the heat.

The Inland Empire variable again. Mounting to a wood jamb is straightforward. Mounting to stucco means anchors, sealing and sometimes a mounting strip to give the housing a flat, plumb surface to sit on. Out-of-square openings need shimming, and a retractable screen that is not plumb will not retract cleanly.

Standard finishes are stocked. Matching an existing door frame color or a non-standard powder coat is a made-to-order item with a lead time attached.

Same logic as windows: setup and travel are spread over the job, so four screens in one visit price better per unit than four separate visits.

Upper-floor window screens and balcony door screens mean ladders or staging. It is labor rather than material, but it is real.

Very wide or very tall openings can exceed a standard product range and move into a made-to-order system. Arched and angled openings generally cannot take a retractable screen at all, which is worth knowing before you plan around one.

Retractable screens do not normally require a building permit, and there is rarely much to haul away beyond an old swinging screen door. This is the one job on this site where those two lines are usually near zero.
